Corban

A young man of Dun Carreg who grows from a bullied boy into a disciplined fighter under Gar’s secret training, bonded to the wolven Storm and the horse Shield. Revealed as the true Bright Star, Elyon’s prophesied champion, he escapes the fall of Ardan by sea, mourning his father and believing his sister dead.

Veradis

A young warrior of Tenebral eager to step out of his brothers’ shadows, who becomes blood-sworn First Sword to Prince Nathair. His loyalty carries him through campaigns against giants and into darker deeds, including killing Mandros, as he follows his prince even when Nathair sides with Ardan’s enemies.

Cywen

Corban’s older sister, more at home with horses and knives than most warriors are with swords, whose friendship with Princess Edana draws her into court politics. During Dun Carreg’s fall she watches her father die, then hurls herself and the traitor Conall from the battlements, leaving the fleeing survivors certain she is dead.

Evnis

A noble of Ardan who pledged himself to Asroth eighteen years before the story begins, driven by ambition and the hope of saving his dying wife Fain. His long betrayal, from arranging raids to unearthing the giants’ book of earth power to opening Dun Carreg’s gates, hands the kingdom to Rhin and Asroth.

Nathair

The prince of Tenebral, clever and ambitious, who pioneers disciplined shield-wall tactics and becomes convinced that he himself is the Bright Star. Certain the Banished Lands must be united under a single ruler, he embraces the Vin Thalun and Calidus, and at Dun Carreg his Eagle Guard turns on King Brenin.

Gar

The stablemaster of Dun Carreg, who is far more than he appears. He quietly trains Corban in balance, restraint, and an unfamiliar two-handed sword style, reveals startling skill of his own when the fortress falls, and helps shepherd the survivors out through the hidden tunnels.

Calidus

A seemingly harmless old man who stages an encounter with Prince Nathair and installs himself as the prince’s most trusted adviser. Working a far larger deception in Asroth’s service, he steers Nathair toward the Jehar and, at Haldis, orders the massacre of King Romar’s warriors.

Camlin

An outlaw who leads the raid on Darol’s hold while trying to keep its women and children from harm. Wounded, captured, and slowly remade by remorse under Brina’s care, he fights for Dun Carreg during the siege and escapes with the loyal survivors he once would have preyed upon.

Kastell

A young warrior of Isiltir, pushed aside in his own kingdom by his scheming cousin Jael. He survives a giant ambush with Maquin, joins the Gadrai to fight the Hunen, and is murdered by Jael at Haldis while trying to defend King Romar from betrayal.

Maquin

Kastell’s steadfast shieldman, who keeps urging him to stop giving ground to Jael. He endures the giant attacks and the destruction of the Gadrai at his friend’s side, and survives Haldis only to witness Jael murder Kastell.

Storm

A wolven cub, offspring of the pregnant wolven Corban once pulled from a bog, who attaches herself to him and grows at an unnatural pace. Feared by many in Dun Carreg, she proves fiercely loyal, protecting Corban through the siege and escaping into exile with him.

Rhin

The queen of Cambren, who bound Evnis to Asroth’s cause eighteen years before the main story with promises of the giant book and a starstone cauldron. Her patient conspiracy, worked through Evnis and hired outlaws, ends with Ardan delivered into her hands.

Brenin

King of Ardan and lord of Dun Carreg, betrayed by men inside his own court. When Evnis opens the fortress gates, Nathair’s Eagle Guard turns against him and he is cut down in his own throne room.

Brina

The healer of Dun Carreg, feared by the local children as a witch, whose brusque manner conceals real learning in healing arts, older powers, and prophecy. She turns Corban’s attempted theft into an apprenticeship, nurses the captive Camlin, and escapes with the survivors when Ardan falls.
