How does Alchemised end?
Helena frees Kaine from Morrough's hold through a soul-restoration ritual at Spirefell, binding his stolen soul fragment back into his body with the willing sacrifice of his father Atreus. The burning estate collapses behind them as they escape on Amaris, and they eventually settle on a distant island off Etras, where their daughter Enid Rose Ferron is born. Armed with a stronger obsidian bomb Helena built for her, Lila Bayard returns to Paladia and kills Morrough roughly eighteen months later, ending the war. An epilogue set in 1808 follows a grown Enid arriving in a rebuilt Paladia.
Does Kaine Ferron die at the end of Alchemised?
No, although the Resistance plan to destroy Morrough would have required the death of every Undying, Kaine included, and Kaine had long accepted that fate. Helena refuses it, has Ivy Purnell retrieve the phylactery holding his soul fragment from Morrough, and performs a ritual that anchors the fragment using Atreus's willingly given soul. Kaine survives as a mortal man again, transformed, with silver-white hair and pallid grey eyes.
Who kills Morrough in Alchemised?
Lila Bayard does. When word reaches the island that Morrough is regaining strength, Lila resolves to go back to Paladia and finish him; Kaine trains her in hand-to-hand fighting and Helena builds her a more powerful obsidian bomb. Roughly a year and a half after her return, Lila kills Morrough, and it is Lila the public credits with ending the war. Helena and Kaine decline her invitation home and stay on their island.
Why did Helena erase her own memories in Alchemised?
She was captured while fleeing the bombing of the West Port Laboratory and dragged before Morrough. In the seconds before he could tear into her mind, she turned her animancy on herself, wiping out Kaine, their affair, the obsidian weapons, the Stone of the Heavens, and three years of her life so the High Necromancer could not take those secrets. The erasure held until her pregnancy shattered the compulsion and the memories flooded back.
What happens to Aurelia and Atreus Ferron at the end of Alchemised?
Atreus murders Aurelia — possibly of his own accord, possibly under Morrough's influence — shortly after she ambushes Helena in jealousy and Kaine blinds her to subdue her. Atreus then learns that Morrough killed his wife Enid and has victimized Kaine from the start, and he offers his own soul as the willing sacrifice the restoration ritual demands. What remains of his soul is poured into the reanimated corpse of Jan Crowther.
What happens in the epilogue of Alchemised?
In 1808 a grown Enid Rose Ferron arrives in a rebuilt Paladia to study vivimancy at the reopened Alchemy Institute, greeted by Lila Bayard and her son Pol, who has been accepted alongside her. In a bookstore Enid finds a new history of the war that brands her father a born psychopath and records her mother as a foreign alchemist who never fought. History has erased Helena's real role as the Resistance's secret animancer, and the novel closes on the implication that the next generation, who know the truth, will correct the record.
