Helena Marino
The protagonist, an Etras-born healer who is publicly a vivimancer and secretly an animancer, the rarest kind of alchemist. Captured at the war's end after erasing her own memories to protect her lover, she survives stasis, imprisonment, and a coerced pregnancy, recovers the truth, restores Kaine's stolen soul, and is quietly written out of the history she shaped.
Kaine Ferron
The regime's High Reeve and most feared general, master of the Iron Guild, Helena's old Institute rival, and secretly the Resistance double agent who loved her. One of Morrough's tethered Undying, with part of his soul stored inside the necromancer's body, he survives only through the ritual Helena performs, emerging mortal and changed.
Morrough
The High Necromancer who rules Paladia, half-rotten and kept going by feeding on his own Undying and by wearing Luc Holdfast's bones. He wins the war by secretly possessing Luc for months, and pursues true immortality for his Hevgoss backers until Lila Bayard finally kills him.
Luc Holdfast
Helena's best friend, the prophesied leader of the Resistance, and acting Principate after the murder of his father Apollo. Possessed in secret by Morrough and used to breach the Order's last stronghold, he resurfaces just long enough to turn his blade on himself, asking Helena to care for Lila and their child.
Lila Bayard
Soren's twin sister, a Resistance fighter who survives capture by the Undying and secretly bears Luc's son, Pol. Hidden by Kaine through the collapse, she later returns to Paladia armed with Helena's final obsidian bomb, kills Morrough, and stands in history as the face of victory.
Soren Bayard
Lila's twin brother and Helena's steadiest comfort after the Council condemns her for heresy. Mortally wounded during Luc's rescue, he is half-restored by Helena's secret necromancy long enough to walk the survivors out, then dies for good and is officially remembered as a hero.
Aurelia Ferron
Kaine's wife, bred by her own family from a cousin marriage for exactly that role and refused by her husband for years. Venomous toward the prisoner in her house, she schemes with Lancaster and attacks Helena more than once before Atreus murders her.
Atreus Ferron
Kaine's father, lingering at Spirefell as a lich no longer wholly under Morrough's sway. After murdering Aurelia and turning on his son, he learns how Morrough destroyed his family and offers his willing soul to the ritual that binds Kaine's own back into his body.
Dr. Stroud
The regime physician who takes charge of Helena from the moment she leaves the stasis tank, managing her feeding, her drugging, and the forced pregnancy with cold precision. Years afterward she is among the figures from the past whom Kaine quietly kills to bury the evidence.
Ivy Purnell
An orphan trainee healer who relishes the interrogation work that shatters Helena, and the traitor who admitted Morrough's forces to headquarters in exchange for her dead sister's reanimation. She later begs forgiveness at Spirefell and redeems herself by retrieving Kaine's phylactery from Morrough, knowing the price she will pay.
Shiseo
A foreign metallurgist pressed into the regime's service, who whispers an apology even as he fits Helena's nullifying manacles. Secretly her friend, he helps design an alloy keyed to her resonance, builds the obsidian bomb, aids Kaine in saving her at the war's end, and is murdered on the road, almost certainly at Morrough's order.
Ilva Holdfast
Luc's great-aunt and the hidden hand steering the Resistance Council. She recruits Helena as Kaine's sole liaison with orders to seduce him, and later admits the Order's oldest deception, that the Stone of the Heavens truly exists and its power has been lied about for centuries.
Mandl
The warden of the stasis warehouse whose mind Helena forcibly opened during the war. Recognizing her captive, she had Helena gassed into a tank and kept conscious there out of private jealousy, and after her promotion she is assassinated in midwinter, the first sign Helena gets that some Resistance remains.
Erik Lancaster
A former Institute classmate of Helena's serving in the Nickel Guild, and Aurelia's lover; his troop is the one that captured Helena after the laboratory bombing. At Spirefell he drugs Helena and attempts to rape her, and Kaine disembowels him for it.
